Summary:

In 1904, a Scottish playwright by the name of James Matthew Barrie wrote a stage show entitled, “Peter Pan or The Boy who would never grow up”. In 1911, Barrie penned a novel based on the play entitled, “Peter and Wendy”. He assigned all royalties to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. The copy write has been extended to this very day. I began reading the novel over the holidays and am thoroughly enjoying it. Although it has been difficult to read it without images of Mary Martin who played Peter on Broadway and TV in the 60’s, Robin Williams in the movie Hook with Dustin Hoffman and Julia Roberts flying through my head. Peter Pan and I have had an interesting relationship through my life. We both wear green tights. I have been told often, to grow up and act my age. At 20, it’s a criticism, at 50 it is a compliment. In many ways, maintaining a “childlike” attitude is a good thing, even the scriptures encourage it. However, being “childish” is a different matter altogether. But to change from “childish” to “childlike” one must grow up, which Peter Pan was diametrically opposed to. To grow up one must leave Neverland.
